Jennifer Long

Jennifer Long - visual ergonomicsJennifer Long is an Occupational Optometry Specialist and a Certified Professional Ergonomist. She has completed a Bachelor of Optometry and a Master of Safety Science.

By combining her academic background with practical optometry and ergonomics experience, Jennifer offers a holistic approach to solving vision problems in the workplace. She is typically asked to provide consultancy services investigating visual comfort and visual demands in a variety of work environments

Jennifer is an active member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA). She is currently the professional development coordinator of the HFESA (NSW) Branch. Other roles she has held previously within the HFESA include NSW Branch Chair and Director on the Federal Board.

She holds the following appointments:

  • Visiting Fellow in the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW
  • Committee Member Australian Standards Committee SF006 Eye and Face Protection
  • Committee Member - International Commission of Occupational Health (ICOH) Scientific Committee on Work and Vision
  • Committee Member – International Ergonomics Association (IEA) Technical Committee for Visual Ergonomics

Jennifer also works as an optometrist in private practice.

IES: The Lighting Society, NSW Award for Achievement in the Principles of Lighting Course at the Sydney Institute of Technology, 2006

HFESA Ken Provins Award (best paper at annual conference) for ‘Two practical tasks for assessing depth perception at near distance – comparison of performance under monocular and binocular conditions’. 2003

ESA Alan Welford Award (published paper on ergonomics) for ‘Readability of information road signs: a preliminary study’. 2001

The Safety Institute of Australia (NSW Division) Bill Lessels’ Memorial Prize for Master of Safety Science. 2001

Why choose a certified professional ergonomist?

A certified professional ergonomist is recognised by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society as having expertise in ergonomics. To achieve this qualification, an ergonomist must have:

  • Knowledge of all domains of ergonomics (i.e. physical, cognitive and organisational ergonomics)
  • Completed an education program related to ergonomics
  • Demonstrated their expertise with examples of their work
  • A minimum of four years (or equivalent) full-time experience as an ergonomist.

Jennifer was awarded Certified Professional Ergonomist status in 2005.
